Description

Travers Smith is a leading full-service law firm, with a wealth of experience in its areas of specialisation. The firm has a market-leading reputation for its international expertise in Asset Management, M&A and Dispute Resolution & Investigations. Clients include asset managers across the alternative asset classes (private equity, venture, credit, infrastructure and real estate), publicly listed and private companies, financial institutions, and other business enterprises involved in large and complex UK and cross-border matters, transactions and disputes. Our purpose is to provide the highest quality of service to our clients whilst enabling our people to achieve professional fulfilment in a supportive, inclusive and enjoyable working environment.

Department

The Technology team provide the very highest quality of service together with carefully selected and developed technology to enable our internal clients to provide the service our external clients require from a top international law firm. The Tech team is recognised as being one of the brightest and best law firm technology teams in the market.

The Technology group is responsible for the delivery of all Central and Legal Technology services within the firm. The group is a business services function that supports and contributes to the objective of the legal practice. The Central Technology department consists of service delivery, application delivery, training, infrastructure, and information security. The Legal Technology department consists of legal products, engineering, and eDiscovery. Both departments support the business with strategic technology delivery. The department is committed to providing a high quality of service to its clients and the clients of the firm.

The Role

Join the TechOps function to maintain, secure and improve a hybrid enterprise technology estate. The role takes end-to-end ownership of operational tasks and small-to-medium projects, resolves complex infrastructure issues, strengthens controls, automates repeatable activity and creates clear, supportable documentation. The successful candidate will provide immediate capacity while reducing concentration of knowledge and ownership across the existing team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and improve Windows Server, VMware/vCenter, storage, backup and disaster-recovery services, including server builds, restores, lifecycle management and decommissioning.
  • Administer Microsoft 365 services, with particular emphasis on Exchange Online, mail flow, mailbox permissions, retention, Teams and related messaging security platforms.
  • Manage identity and privileged access across Entra ID and Active Directory, including enterprise applications, app registrations, certificates, secrets, SSO, RBAC and access reviews.
  • Support enterprise networking and connectivity firewalls, switching, DNS, DHCP, VPN, Wi-Fi, circuits and monitoring diagnosing faults and delivering controlled infrastructure changes.
  • Deliver endpoint and device-management improvements using Intune, Autopilot and Windows tooling, including policy remediation, application deployment and device lifecycle tasks.
  • Execute patching, vulnerability remediation, software upgrades and end-of-life activities in line with change-control and security requirements.
  • Automate repetitive operational work using PowerShell, APIs, PowerCLI and infrastructure-as-code practices, improving alerting, reporting and data quality.
  • Maintain monitoring and operational assurance across SolarWinds and other platforms, investigating alerts, capacity issues, backup exceptions and service degradation.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation, diagrams, runbooks, knowledge articles and recovery procedures that are usable by the wider team.
  • Own assigned work from intake through prioritisation, testing, change approval, implementation, communication and closure, actively managing dependencies and risks.
  • Collaborate with Security, the Service Desk, Business Systems, workplace technology, suppliers and business stakeholders, escalating clearly when cross-team action is required.

Technology exposure

Core infrastructure

  • Windows Server, VMware/vSphere/vCenter, storage/SAN, backup and recovery, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP and certificate services

Microsoft cloud

  • Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, Entra ID, Azure, Teams, Intune, Autopilot, enterprise applications and Microsoft Graph

Network & security

  • Firewalls, switching, VPN, Wi-Fi, SolarWinds, vulnerability management, Defender, and Mimecast/Netskope-class controls and privileged access

Automation

  • PowerShell, PowerCLI, REST APIs, reporting, scheduled automation, and exposure to Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code tooling

Operations

  • ITIL-aligned incident, change and problem practices, patching, lifecycle management, monitoring, capacity and disaster recovery

Personal Specification - Experience, Knowledge & Skills

Essential experience

  • Strong hands-on experience in a broad enterprise infrastructure or cloud operations role, with evidence of independently resolving complex technical issues.
  • Practical administration experience across Windows Server, Active Directory/Entra ID and Microsoft 365, with a solid understanding of identity, permissions and authentication.
  • Experience supporting virtualisation, backup/recovery and core network services, with disciplined troubleshooting and change implementation.
  • Ability to script operational solutions in PowerShell and integrate systems through APIs, with a track record of removing manual steps and improving reliability.
  • Security-minded approach to patching, vulnerability remediation, privileged access, certificate/secret renewal, hardening and audit evidence.
  • Clear written communication and the ability to create concise, accurate runbooks, diagrams, technical standards and stakeholder updates.
  • Strong ownership, prioritisation and follow-through across competing BAU tasks, projects, dependencies and urgent operational work.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams and suppliers while remaining comfortable making sound technical decisions independently.

Desirable experience

  • Experience with SolarWinds, VMware PowerCLI, enterprise storage, Redstor/AvePoint-class backup tooling, Mimecast, Netskope, Fortinet or Juniper technologies.
  • Exposure to Azure infrastructure, Terraform, Microsoft Graph, endpoint remediation, monitoring integrations and automated reporting.
  • A relevant Microsoft, VMware, networking, security or IT service-management certification.
  • Experience in a regulated professional-services environment where resilience, confidentiality and auditable change control are important.

Working style

  • Outcome-focused and calm under pressure; diagnoses before acting and communicates risk, impact and next steps clearly.
  • Balances pace with control tests changes, records evidence, plans rollback and avoids creating unsupported technical debt.
  • Curious and improvement-oriented, with the judgement to automate the right tasks and simplify processes rather than merely moving work around.
  • Generous with knowledge and comfortable coaching colleagues, pairing on complex work and improving team-wide resilience.
