We are seeking a hands-on Payment Operations Associate / VP to help run, strengthen and continue developing the Marex Global Payments operating model. The role will sit close to the day-to-day running of the product and will require direct involvement across payment queues, confirmations, settlements, investigations, reconciliations, safeguarding support, incident management and exception handling.
During the build and launch phase, the role will combine BAU delivery with process development, control discipline, escalation management and team support. As the operating model matures, the successful candidate will remain close to complex, time-critical, client-impacting or control-sensitive activity, while helping to improve scalability, consistency, automation and operational resilience across the function.
Global Payment Operations Department Overview
Purpose
Global Payments Operations is responsible for the safe, timely and accurate execution of payment activity across the end-to-end payment lifecycle. The function supports confirmations, settlements, payment queues, reconciliations, safeguarding activity, investigations, exception management and operational control for the Marex Global Payments product.
The department operates in a control-sensitive environment, supporting domestic and cross-border payment flows across multiple currencies, entities, jurisdictions, correspondent banks and market cut-off times. It plays a key role in maintaining accurate records, safeguarding funds, managing operational risk and ensuring that issues are identified, owned, escalated and resolved with clear evidence.
Core Functions
1. Confirmations, Settlements & Payment Processing
Monitor and process daily confirmations, settlements, sweeps, payment queues, funding movements and related operational entries.
Check payment instructions, beneficiary details, trade data, currency rules, cut-offs and supporting information before processing.
2. Payment Investigations & Exception Management
Manage payment enquiries, repairs, exceptions and investigations, including rejected, delayed, returned, amended, unmatched or misdirected payments.
Work with correspondent banks, payment partners and internal teams to progress cases, obtain updates and resolve issues within expected service standards.
3. Reconciliations, Safeguarding & Financial Controls
Perform and oversee intraday and end-of-day reconciliations across payment, settlement, funding and safeguarding-related accounts.
Investigate breaks, unmatched items, suspense balances and funding discrepancies, ensuring ownership, escalation, remediation and closure evidence are clear.
4. Risk, Incidents & Control Oversight
Support incident management, control monitoring, risk identification, issue remediation and post-incident improvement activity.
Maintain operating discipline through clear procedures, evidence standards, MI, escalation routes and governance updates.
5. Change, Partners & Continuous Improvement
Work with Product, Finance, Technology, Financial Crime, Risk, Client Services, correspondent banks and payment partners to improve payment workflows and operational readiness.
Use data, MI, AI and automation tools responsibly to improve reporting, workflow efficiency, investigation quality and control consistency.
Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership & Delivery
Participate directly in daily payment operations activity, including confirmations, settlements, sweeps, payment queues, funding movements and related operational entries.
Set clear priorities for time-sensitive payments, investigations, reconciliation breaks and escalations, ensuring work is allocated, tracked and completed within agreed standards.
Act as a senior point of support for complex or high-impact payment issues, while remaining prepared to step into the detail and help progress BAU items where required.
Maintain operating rhythms that keep BAU activity visible, prioritised and controlled across the team.
Payment Investigations & Exception Oversight
Take hands-on involvement in payment enquiries, repairs, exceptions and investigations, including rejected, delayed, returned, amended, unmatched or misdirected payments.
Guide root-cause analysis across payment messages, transaction data, funding movements, system records, correspondent bank updates and client-facing information.
Ensure investigation records are complete, clear and audit-ready, including ownership, ageing, escalation status, evidence and closure rationale.
Identify recurring exception themes and work with Product, Technology, Risk and operational teams to reduce repeat issues through process, data or system improvements.
Reconciliations, Controls & Safeguarding Support
Participate in and oversee intraday and end-of-day reconciliations across payment, settlement, funding and safeguarding-related accounts.
Review material, aged or unresolved breaks, ensuring ownership, escalation, remediation plans and closure evidence are clear.
Support daily safeguarding calculations, evidence packs and related exception handling, ensuring issues are documented and escalated appropriately.
Use reconciliation trends, MI and control observations to improve matching logic, reduce manual intervention and strengthen financial controls.
Control Ownership, Risk & Incident Management
Maintain operating processes, controls and MI that help the function remain disciplined, predictable and transparent.
Act as an escalation point for high-value, time-critical, fraud-related, regulatory or client-impacting issues.
Support incident management from assessment through to escalation, remediation tracking, stakeholder updates and post-incident actions.
Contribute to control design, procedure maintenance, risk assessments, issue remediation and audit or governance requests relating to payment operations.
People Leadership & Team Development
Provide day-to-day guidance, coaching and quality review for analysts or junior team members, where applicable.
Help set expectations for work quality, case handling, escalation discipline, record-keeping and control evidence.
Support onboarding, cross-training and knowledge sharing so the team can operate consistently across payment flows, investigations and reconciliations.
Provide input into workload planning, performance discussions and capability development, if the role includes formal line-management responsibilities.
Change, Partners & Continuous Improvement
Work closely with Product, Finance, Technology, Financial Crime, Risk, Client Services, correspondent banks and payment partners to improve payment workflows and operational readiness.
Support system releases, testing, new payment capabilities and process changes, ensuring operational impacts are understood and controlled.
Use data, MI, AI and automation tools responsibly to improve reporting, workflow efficiency, investigation quality and control consistency.
Identify opportunities to reduce manual effort, improve scalability and make payment operations more consistent across products, entities and jurisdictions.
Competencies, Skills & Experience:
Strong hands-on experience in payment operations, settlements, investigations, reconciliations or financial operations, ideally in a regulated financial services environment.
Practical knowledge of domestic and cross-border payment flows, including SWIFT, MT and MX/ISO 20022 formats, cut-offs, settlement timelines, returns, recalls, repairs and exception scenarios.
Experience leading complex investigations, reconciliation breaks or operational incidents through to clear, evidenced resolution.
Strong control mindset, with the ability to design, operate and improve controls, procedures, MI, escalation paths and evidence standards.
Confidence using data, Excel and reporting or workflow tools to monitor performance, identify themes and support better operational decisions.
Experience coaching, mentoring or leading others, with the ability to set standards, review work and support team capability.
Clear communication skills, particularly when explaining risks, incidents, breaks, client-impacting issues or required decisions to different audiences.
A practical improvement mindset, with experience reducing manual effort, improving workflow efficiency and strengthening operational resilience.
The highest level of integrity, alongside a collaborative and accountable leadership style that supports trusted relationships, early escalation and strong operational outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with crypto payments or blockchain-based payment operations.
Familiarity with Safeguarding and CASS15 support, payment controls and regulated financial services requirements.
Experience using AI, automation, BI, workflow or reporting tools to improve operational quality, consistency and scalability.
