About this opportunity

Were building the future of payments - and this is your chance to be right at the centre of it.

Our Payments Digital Services team is shaping the next generation of experiences across payments and beyond. Think digital identity, wallet-based services, embedded finance, and entirely new propositions that are redefining how customers interact with money, data, and value.

As a Backend Software Engineer, youll play a key role in bringing this vision to life. Youll be working on a connected, modern platform that integrates seamlessly with best-in-class tools and services, helping customers make smarter financial decisions and access innovative financial products.

What youll be doing:

  • Delivering clean, architecturally sound, maintainable server-side code (ideally full-stack experience).
  • Collaborating with stakeholders across the business to build and develop a world-class product.
  • Motivating the team past roadblocks to make sure features ship as effectively as possible.
  • Guiding design discussions and helping the team balance flexibility, expediency, scalability, and performance.
  • Partnering with product and engineering leaders to constantly refine and iterate on development processes.
  • Championing new technologies and promoting best development practices.
  • Keeping an eye on the future while proactively, but pragmatically, tackling technical debt.

Why join us?

Were transforming at pace. Investing billions in our people, data and tech to change the way we meet the needs of our 28 million customers. Were growing, and wed love you to be part of the journey.

What were looking for:

  • In-depth knowledge of Golang
  • Experience building microservices, ideally deployed in containers on Kubernetes.
  • Solid grounding in agile development practices.
  • Experience with both RDBMS and NoSQL datastores.
  • Ability to diagnose problems across the stack (client, HTTP/network, server, database, OS) with sound rationale for decisions.
  • Proven experience building large, concurrent, distributed applications.
  • Experience developing and running large-scale production environments in partnership with DevOps or SRE teams.
  • A genuine interest in working in a fast-paced startup, ideally in fintech or payments.
  • A voracious appetite for learning and improvement.

And any of these would be great:

  • Knowledge of PHP
  • Experience with real-time, low-latency, high-frequency transaction-based systems.
  • Experience with event-driven architectures.

We know that great talent comes from many backgrounds. Whilst this job advert may reference specific years of experience, we recognise that skills are developed in many ways, so if you have relevant, transferable experience, we encourage you to apply.

This is a place for you

Our ambition is to be the leading UK business for diversity, equity and inclusion supporting our customers, colleagues and communities and were committed to creating an environment in which everyone can thrive, learn and develop.

We also offer a wide-ranging benefits package, which includes:

  • An annual performance-related bonus
  • Share schemes including free shares
  • Benefits you can adapt to your lifestyle, such as discounted shopping
  • 30 days holiday, with bank holidays on top
  • A range of wellbeing initiatives and generous parental leave policies
