Role Summary

We are seeking an exceptional Director to join our Reading Mobility Tax Advisory practice. This individual will play a pivotal role in driving the commercial growth of the practice, with a particular focus on the high-growth company and SME market segments, while leading multi-disciplinary engagement teams and playing an active role in the development of our people.

The successful candidate will be expected to operate with significant autonomy, combining technical excellence with entrepreneurial drive and strong leadership capability.

Key Responsibilities

1.

        Business Development & Commercial Growth

  • Proactively identify and pursue new business opportunities within the local mobility tax advisory space, with a particular focus on high-growth businesses and SMEs.
  • Build and maintain a strong external network of referrers, intermediaries, and clients, acting as a visible and credible ambassador for the practice in the market.
  • Lead the preparation and delivery of proposals and pitches, working collaboratively across service lines to bring a compelling, multi-disciplinary offering to clients.
  • Develop and leverage knowledge of the broader tax landscape (including employment taxes, share schemes, corporate tax, and international mobility considerations) to identify cross-selling opportunities and deliver genuinely integrated solutions.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of the practice's go-to-market strategy, identifying new sectors, segments, and service propositions.
  • Monitor market trends and legislative developments, translating these into commercial opportunities for the practice.

2.    Client Engagement & Delivery Leadership

  • Lead and oversee the delivery of complex, high-quality mobility tax engagements from inception to completion, ensuring adherence to quality, risk management, and professional standards.
  • Lead and oversee delivery of cross-border mobility tax, immigration and social security projects and advice leveraging the Deloitte global network.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for key clients, building trusted adviser relationships at senior levels within client organisations.
  • Manage engagement economics, including budgeting, billing, WIP management, and recovery, ensuring the commercial performance of engagements is optimised.
  • Oversee and review technical work product produced by the engagement team, ensuring accuracy, quality, and alignment with client objectives and applicable legislation.
  • Lead on complex technical matters, providing authoritative advice across all aspects of local mobility tax, including employer compliance, shadow payrolls, tax equalisation, social security, business traveller risk, and related areas.
  • Effectively manage and mitigate engagement risk, escalating appropriately and maintaining robust documentation and file management.

3.     Multi-Disciplinary Tax Leadership

  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues across other tax disciplines (including corporate tax, employment tax, share schemes, transfer pricing, and indirect tax) to structure and deliver integrated tax solutions.
  • Act as a connector within the practice, identifying when client situations warrant multi-service line involvement and facilitating seamless introduction and collaboration.
  • Bring commercial creativity and technical rigour to complex, often ambiguous client problems, drawing on a broad understanding of the tax landscape.

4.      People Development & Talent Management

  • Actively coach, mentor, and support the development of junior team members (including Senior Managers, Managers, and Assistants), with a particular focus on progressing high-potential individuals towards Associate Director and Director roles.
  • Provide timely, constructive, and honest feedback to team members, both informally day-to-day and formally through appraisal processes.
  • Act as a role model for our values, professional standards, and inclusive behaviours.
  • Participate in recruitment activity for the practice, contributing to the identification and attraction of talent at all levels.
  • Support the wider people strategy of the practice, including initiatives relating to wellbeing, inclusion, and professional development.

5.      Internal Leadership & Practice Development

  • Contribute to the leadership and strategic development of the local mobility tax advisory practice, playing an active role in team meetings, planning activities, and the ongoing evolution of our service offering.
  • Lead or contribute to internal knowledge-sharing initiatives, including technical training, thought leadership, and knowledge management.
  • Support the firm's risk management and quality processes, acting as a reviewing director on engagements where appropriate.
  • Drive innovation with an entrepreneurial, continuous improvement mindset, challenging the status quo and leading positive change within the practice

Essential Technical Skills & Knowledge

  • Deep technical knowledge of UK (and ideally international) mobility tax, including income tax, social security, employer compliance obligations, and tax equalisation / protection approaches.
  • Strong track record of delivering international cross border mobility tax projects and advice
  • Strong understanding of the broader employment tax and/or corporate tax landscape, enabling credible multi-disciplinary client advisory conversations.
  • Experience advising high-growth companies and/or SMEs on their workforce mobility and tax obligations, including scale-up considerations.
  • Familiarity with relevant HMRC practice, employment status considerations, share-based remuneration, and business traveller frameworks.
  • Innovative continuous improvement mindset

Preferred Qualifications

  • ACA, CTA, ATT or equivalent professional qualification (or equivalent experience).
  • Relevant post-qualification experience at Director level or above in a professional services
