Job Profile Summary

This job description sets out the responsibilities of the Engineering & Maintenance Manager. The successful candidate will be accountable for the engineering integrity of the businesss research and development laboratory and pilot plant equipment, associated infrastructure, and supporting systems based at Bengaluru. The role carries key accountability for compliance with applicable legislative, company, and site requirements. The post holder will act as the custodian of core engineering systems, processes, and procedures for the business, setting standards, implementing policy, and providing assurance across these areas.

The role will support the day-to-day engineering strategy, modifications, and reliability improvements for all R&D assets, from pilot plants through to laboratory-scale equipment at the Bengaluru site. The post holder will also support the development and delivery of capital projects as required and provide engineering discipline leadership to ensure compliance with mechanical engineering standards across the Bengaluru site.

This is a hybrid role, combining leadership of a multi-disciplinary engineering team with an operational focus on safe, reliable, and compliant delivery.

This role leads the assurance of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation engineering within an R&D environment, providing oversight and verification of engineering delivery.

The post holder will also provide technical query support to the Bengaluru operating teams.

Success in this role means strengthening inherently safer design, supporting safe systems of work, and meeting the engineering challenges of a research, development, and technology-led business.

What you will be responsible for:

  • Lead the safe and effective delivery of engineering and maintenance activities for bps research equipment and infrastructure, ensuring health, safety, legislative, commercial, and business requirements are met and maintained at the Bengaluru site.
  • Act as the Accountable Engineering and Maintenance Person for the multi-disciplinary site engineering team, ensuring compliance and delivery in line with the Group Operating Standard and bp engineering practices, including the development of local practices where required.
  • Support bps R&D operations team to minimise downtime and optimise the availability of laboratory and pilot plant assets.
  • Provide guidance and support for major engineering and maintenance events at the bp R&D Bengaluru site, including outages, pilot plant shutdowns, and planned or unplanned events. Providing leadership for incidents throughout their lifecycle.
  • Ensure competent discipline experts are available to support the technical requirements of the site-based R&D team, drawing on local engineering resources or corporate engineering support as required.
  • Review and monitor the planned preventative maintenance programme, identifying and implementing improvements and cost efficiencies.
  • Optimise spare parts holdings, with a focus on asset life, obsolescence, strategic spares, and safe and secure storage.
  • Manage the Bengaluru site asset register and clearly identify safety-critical equipment.
  • Ensure maintenance and engineering goods and services are competitively tendered and delivered in a cost-effective manner.
  • Lead design review and assurance for site-based experimental equipment and pilot plants, including externally procured small- to medium-scale laboratory research equipment.
  • Deliver the Engineering and Maintenance Manager role positively and professionally, completing required self-development and driving compliance and assurance programmes to confirm that systems and equipment are designed to bp standards and technical practices.
  • Lead Management of Change activities and participate in Process Safety Reviews, HAZOPs, and HAZIDs for operational R&D equipment, identifying and maintaining prevention and mitigation barriers. Provide subject matter expertise, assurance, and challenge within local risk processes.
  • Select system components to ensure material and chemical compatibility with unit operating conditions and site operational requirements.
  • Provide assurance of pressure vessel design, inspection, testing regimes, code compliance, and analysis.
  • Provide risk-based assurance for safety-critical equipment, supporting site teams in the development and management of planned preventative maintenance. Ensure mechanical and pressure systems are maintained for continued safe, efficient, and reliable operation.
  • Provide assurance of third-party design proposals.
  • Provide assurance of the technical integrity of mechanical systems. Create and participate in the review of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams and Process Flow Diagrams.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelors and/or masters degree in engineering or a related mechanical engineering discipline.
  • 10+ years experience in the operation and maintenance of mechanical systems, including demonstrated experience in a research and development environment.
  • Knowledge and experience of laboratory-scale equipment and gas systems.
  • Good working knowledge of relevant industry standards, such as ASME Section VIII, ASME B31.4, API 600, API 6D, UK HSE requirements, US BSEE and EPA requirements, and equivalent Indian standards.
  • Strong leadership skills, ability to influence and drive decisions.
  • Fluent written and spoken English language. 
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to address technical matters clearly and confidently, both verbally and in writing, across Projects and Operations and at all levels of the company.
  • Able to demonstrate pragmatism when balancing technical decisions with operational needs, delivering safe and competitive solutions.

Desirable criteria and qualifications 

  • Professional Engineer and/or Chartered Engineer status
  • 5+ years experience of research and development-scale projects.
  • Working knowledge of relevant ASME, ISO, API, and related Indian standards.
  • Experience with Root Cause Failure Analysis investigations.
  • Experience with HAZOPs, HAZIDs, Process Safety Reviews, and risk assessments.
  • Experience working across cultures and engaging with a wide range of customers and suppliers.
