Department Overview
The Security Operations team forms part of the Security Division. The teams primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of all staff, tenants, and visitors, and to protect the Banks buildings, assets, and information.
Security Operations is structured to provide flexibility and resilience, allowing teams to train, test, and exercise without impacting daily operational delivery. As the Bank of England is part of the UKs Critical National Infrastructure, and supports the production of Bank of England banknotes, the team works closely with law enforcement and external partners.
Security Officers engage with colleagues, visitors, and stakeholders across the Bank, making this a varied and operationally important role within a disciplined and professional environment.
Role Purpose
The Security Officer is responsible for the frontline delivery of security duties at Threadneedle Street/Moorgate. The role requires vigilance, professionalism, and sound judgement, with a strong focus on protecting people, buildings, and assets while providing a professional and welcoming service.
Security Officers are expected to use their own initiative to identify and respond to security risks, escalating issues to the Security Shift Supervisor or Security Shift Manager when appropriate.
The role includes duties across the perimeter, internal security posts, and control room, depending on deployment and operational requirements.
Key Responsibilities FrontLine Security Operations
- Deliver a professional and visible security presence across the site.
- Engage confidently and courteously with:
- Staff
- Visitors and members of the public
- VIPs and senior Bank stakeholders
- Carry out:
- Static guarding duties
- Internal and external patrols
- Searching of people, vehicles, and buildings
- Examination of deliveries and mail (where required)
- Maintain vigilance and situational awareness to identify unusual or suspicious activity.
Building, Asset & Perimeter Protection
- Protect Bank buildings, infrastructure, and highvalue assets.
- Monitor crowd movements and public behaviour around the perimeter, identifying potential risks or hostile activity.
- Report and respond to security concerns promptly and accurately.
Control Room Operations (when deployed)
Under the direction of the Security Shift Supervisor, Security Officers may be required to operate within the control room, including:
- Monitoring CCTV systems and identifying security incidents or anomalies.
- Monitoring alarms, access control systems, and fire systems.
- Logging incidents, alarms, and actions accurately in accordance with procedures.
- Maintaining clear communication with officers on the ground and supervisors.
- Escalating incidents appropriately and without delay.
Incident & Emergency Response
- Respond calmly and effectively to security incidents, alarms, and emergencies.
- Implement emergency procedures, including evacuations, as directed.
- Provide First Aid where trained and required.
- Preserve scene integrity and support supervisors and emergency services as necessary.
Reporting Line
- The Security Officer reports directly to the Security Shift Supervisor.
Working Pattern:
- Primarily: Monday to Sunday (various shift patterns: Day/Nights & Bank Holidays.
- With flexibility to support other duties or locations where operationally required.
- Contracted hrs: 20hrs per week
Role Requirements
Minimum Criteria
- Confident engaging with visitors, VIPs, and senior executives of the Bank of England.
- Experience monitoring or operating security systems such as CCTV, alarms, or access control systems.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify unusual or suspicious activity.
- Ability to respond to security incidents and follow emergency procedures.
- Professional demeanour, sound judgement, integrity, and discretion.
- Demonstrates strong geographic knowledge of the Threadneedle Street and Moorgate estates, enabling rapid and accurate navigation to incidents and ensuring timely response to Fire, First Aid, and Security events.
Essential Criteria
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Flexibility, quick thinking, and ability to react immediately to developing situations.
- Ability to work independently while following instructions and procedures.
- Commitment to delivering a professional and customerfocused security service.
- Willingness to support supervisors and cover additional duties when required.
Desirable Criteria
- Valid frontline SIA Licence or evidence of completion of SIA frontline training.
- First Aid certification.
- Previous experience working in a highsecurity or highdemand operational environment.
