Description

Director of Energy, Credit Underwriting

Reporting Line:  RVP Southwest & Head of Energy (Matrix), Regional Director of Credit Underwriting (Direct)

Job Summary: This position will be the lead Credit Underwriter for the Energy vertical and will be responsible for ensuring the most effective credit limit service in terms of quality of decisions, turnaround time and communications toward existing customers and prospects alike to achieve the companys growth and profitability objectives in this sector.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

 

  • Assesses buyers with all information available internally/externally and his/her own market knowledge.
  • Prepare credit limit recommendations where required by the relevant authority matrix to maximize results.
  • Monitoring of the Energy portfolio using reporting tools, working with the Credit Assessment team, and establishing relationships with local and international colleagues to gather all appropriate information to steer the business.
  • Support the Commercial team in managing the portfolio by steering customer loss ratios and implementing necessary actions to ensure or restore profitability of portfolio.
  • Develop industry knowledge by attending association and industry networking events.
  • Makes credit decisions on credit limits consistently.
  • Lead and participate in media engagements, including the identification of appropriate media outlets, Point of View (POV) development, and conducting outreach efforts when required.
  • Mentor and provide guidance / training for team members.

Required Qualifications and Skills

 

  • Advanced degree, MBA or MS in: Finance, Economics, or related discipline.
  • Expertise in NAESB, ISDA and other relevant Energy contracts, physical and spot trading mechanics, sector-specific risk assessment including regulatory, financial and legal frameworks
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in credit underwriting, ideally within trade credit insurance or banking
  • Excellent computer skills, with an understanding of financial software and spreadsheet packages
  • Market knowledge of the US / Canadian energy sectors.
  • Strong business expertise and business/finance assessment skills.
  • Demonstrated commercial awareness and the ability to support relationship management activities.
  • Strong analytical and research skills.
  • Ability to build long term relationships with clients, relationship managers and brokers, even in a context of restrictive decisions.
  • Strong planning, organizational and workflow prioritization skills.
  • Strong communicator, able to convince others of decisions taken; ability to hold visits and contacts including difficult meetings with high profile senior executives.
