Full Job Description

As a Full Stack Engineer, you will provide hands-on technical leadership for the development, modernization, and ongoing support of My Plan Manager, a secure business-to-business portal that plan sponsors use to access Vanguard services, administer users, and manage key plan activities. You will design, build, test, deploy, and support secure, scalable web applications using technologies such as React, TypeScript or JavaScript, Java, REST APIs, and AWS. This role requires direct application-development experience and the ability to work across the full software development lifecycle, from solution design and coding through deployment, production support, and continuous improvement. You will collaborate with product, architecture, security, and engineering partners on initiatives such as My Plan Manager modernization, Credentials as a Service, Integrated Client Experience, Investor Choice, and enhanced single sign-on capabilities. You will also contribute to technical decisions, strengthen engineering practices, troubleshoot complex issues, and mentor other developers.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support secure, scalable full-stack applications using React, TypeScript or JavaScript, Java, REST APIs, microservices, and relational databases.

  • Translate business and technical requirements into maintainable application designs, reusable components, and production-ready code.

  • Develop and integrate APIs, identity services, third-party products, and other enterprise solutions, applying effective authentication, error-handling, monitoring, and resiliency practices.

  • Contribute directly to coding, debugging, automated testing, code reviews, and technical problem-solving across the application stack.

  • Use Git, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, code-quality tools, and secure coding practices to deliver software across development, test, and production environments.

  • Diagnose and resolve production issues through monitoring, debugging, and root cause analysis, while improving application performance, reliability, and supportability.

  • Participate in solution design and technical decision-making, ensuring applications meet architecture, security, quality, accessibility, and maintainability standards.

  • Collaborate with product, architecture, security, engineering, and business partners to deliver solutions and communicate technical decisions, risks, and dependencies.

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship while remaining actively involved in hands-on development and continuous improvement.

  • Participate in special projects and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of related work experience, including significant hands-on application development experience supporting complex enterprise applications.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Hands-on experience building modern web applications using React and TypeScript or JavaScript, including component development, state management, API integration, and testing.

  • Back-end development experience using Java or a comparable object-oriented programming language.

  • Experience implementing REST APIs or microservices integrations, including authentication, error handling, testing, monitoring, and resiliency.

  • Experience developing or supporting applications in AWS or another enterprise cloud environment.

  • Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, code-quality tools, secure coding practices, and deployment processes.

  • Experience supporting production applications, including troubleshooting, root cause analysis, incident resolution, and improvements to performance, resiliency, and reliability.

  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of technical work, explain individual contributions and technical decisions, and collaborate across engineering, product, architecture, security, and business teams.

Preferred technical skills

  • Experience with identity and access management technologies and standards, including single sign-on, OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, or SAML.

  • Experience applying AI-enabled engineering tools and practices to improve development speed, code quality, testing, and documentation.
