Application Engineer III - AWS Data Engineer

About the Role

Join Vanguard's mission to deliver investment success for all investors. We're seeking an AWS Data Engineer to help shape and evolve an enterprise data platform that manages assets and cash flow data across our lines of business. You'll build scalable, serverless data solutions that power analytics and decision-making across the firm.

You'll have opportunities to drive innovation through proof-of-concept development and AI system implementations that address emerging business needs. You'll also participate in strategic initiatives like process optimizations, platform modernization, system rebuilds, and AI enablementhelping shape the future of our data infrastructure.

What You'll Do

  • Design, build, and maintain ETL pipelines for asset and cash flow data, working toward AI-readiness

  • Develop proof-of-concepts and AI-driven solutions to explore new capabilities and meet evolving business needs

  • Build serverless workflows using AWS services like Glue, Lambda, and Step Functions, with guidance on reliability, performance, and cost optimization

  • Integrate data from various sources and APIs to improve data flows and system efficiency

  • Translate business and technical requirements into clean, well-tested code

  • Apply security and data protection best practices aligned with enterprise standards

  • Support production deployments and participate in change control processes

  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to troubleshoot issues and improve the data platform

  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Support team members and contribute to continuous improvement of processes and workflows

  • Maintain technical and operational documentation

What You'll Bring

  • Experience with Python (Pyspark and or pandas/polars/duckdb) and AWS serverless services such as Glue, Lambda, Step Functions, CloudFormation, SNS, SQS

  • Understanding of data lake/warehouse design, SQL, and data optimization

  • Experience building and supporting ETL pipelines and data systems

  • Ability to develop proofs-of-concept and work through technical challenges

  • Experience working in Agile environments and familiarity with tools like JIRA and Confluence

  • Comfort with monitoring, observability, and operational metrics

Nice to Have

  • Experience with enterprise-scale data platforms or AI/ML implementations

  • Background in financial services or regulated environments

  • Interest in clean architecture, automation, and operational excellence

  • Mentoring experience
