Whats the role

This Shell Trading position offers you the opportunity to join the Global Crude Freight Trading Team within its challenging and dynamic Physical and Paper Freight Trading business.  At the senior trader level, this role has the responsibility to both create and execute physical trading strategies and take or manage paper positions backed by innovative analysis models and a global fleet of vessels. 

What youll be doing

As a Senior Freight Trader, you are expected to work closely with the Crude Global Trading Network (GTN) to support its business objectives by providing an innovative, competitive, and profitable freight solutions. Interfacing with the Products Trading Network, as well as Shipping and Maritime, in areas of mutual benefit is also key to success.

The role combines senior freight trading and chartering expertise with responsibility for exposure management and paper trading.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Manage physical and paper freight trading positions in support of the freight team goals/targets
  • Drive and be responsible for the desks exposure management strategy, including oversight of paper trades
  • Demonstrate creativity and book building by looking beyond day-to-day activities and assessing the broader market, actively seeking opportunities to develop the portfolio and generate innovative ideas. Confidently structure short term time charter and COA deals.
  • Collaborate with other stakeholders extensively (e.g. Oil desks, Oil and Freight Operations, contract management, Vetting, Finance).
  • Cover other assets or regions and at least one other vessel class if required and grab opportunities to participate and contribute to x-book work groups/discussions/trade strategies
  • Contribute to the building and development of internal analysis, providing market insight and working closely with the analysis team.
  • Develop leadership qualities by assisting and guiding junior members of the team including assistance with onboarding and training/coaching.
  • Liaise and build relations with counterparties (owners/brokers/charterers) around the world
  • Gather and share market information, assessing the accuracy of such and sharing this across the GTN where useful

It is essential that you can clearly demonstrate that you are a self- starter and able to perform effectively as part of a high-performing team. Candidates should also be able to provide evidence of growth in previous roles, highlighting their ability to contribute meaningfully to book building.

  • Substantial experience in frontline trading, chartering or broking
  • Deep experience in third party negotiations
  • An in depth understanding of shipping operations, including the ability to maximize operational efficiency
  • A strong understanding of charter party terms and their legal and financial impact
  • Sufficient experience to directly address legal, financial and compliance related questions
  • Strong capability in understanding the various exposures at both regional and book level, with ability to actively manage physical options and derivatives, aligned with a clear forward view
  • Ability to work under pressure is an extremely important attribute as is flexibility around working hours and time zones
