Senior Tech Specialist

Role purpose

An Senior Tech Specialist (MQ Specialist) role combines business-critical technology with genuine modernisation: youll work with IBM MQ on mission-critical platforms (z/OS, Linux, IBM i and/or NonStop), where your work has a direct impact on service continuity and the customer experience. It also offers a well-rounded technical challenge by bringing together automation and operations as code, observability/AIOps, and practical cyber security (patching, CVE remediation, hardening, and TLS), enabling you to reduce incidents and eliminate repetitive work through measurable improvements.

An MQ Specialist role combines business-critical technology with genuine modernisation: youll work with IBM MQ on mission-critical platforms (z/OS, Linux, IBM i and/or NonStop), where your work has a direct impact on service continuity and the customer experience. It also offers a well-rounded technical challenge by bringing together automation and operations as code, observability/AIOps, and practical cyber security (patching, CVE remediation, hardening, and TLS), enabling you to reduce incidents and eliminate repetitive work through measurable improvements.

Main activities:

  • Ensure IBM MQ operations across z/OS, Linux, IBM i and/or NonStop, with a focus on security, stability and efficiency.
  • Drive automation and operations as code to reduce manual tasks and errors (scripts/playbooks/runbooks).
  • Standardise configurations and preventive controls (pre-/post-checks) for changes and deployments.
  • Implement advanced observability (metrics, logs, dashboards) and actionable alerts to reduce MTTR.
  • Apply analytics/AI (AIOps) for anomaly detection, event correlation and capacity forecasting.
  • Manage the patch/fix pack/PTF lifecycle and ensure evidence of installation and testing.
  • Lead vulnerability remediation (CVEs) and hardening (TLS/mTLS, certificates, least privilege).
  • Plan and execute upgrades, keeping MQ on IBM-supported versions and avoiding end-of-support.
  • Coordinate with application, infrastructure, network and security teams, and manage IBM cases (PMRs) where applicable.

Requirements

  • Intermediate level of written and spoken English - Mandatory
  • Knowledge in Websphere MQ, IIB IBM Integration Bus ACE App Connect Enterprise.
  • Multi-platform knowledge (z/OS (mainly), Linux, IBM i, NonStop).
  • Administration and troubleshooting of **IBM MQ** (objects, channels, security, logs, DLQ).
  • Experience with patching/upgrades and change management, including testing and rollback.
  • Strong knowledge of TLS/certificates and security controls.
  • Ability to automate (scripting and/or tools such as Ansible or other corporate tooling).
  • Continuous improvement mindset: measure, simplify, standardise.
