The Role
The Engineering Lead for Lending serves as the senior technical leader on the card system frontend & backend capabilities. This role leads engineering teams to build secure, resilient, scalable customer card journeys, elevate team engineering standards, accelerate delivery, and maintain operational excellence within regulated financial services.
Principal responsibilities
Lead, coach cross-functional frontend/backend teams; assist Head of Value Stream to set clear individual & team performance goals.
Work as the OIC when Head of Value Stream is out of office.
Assist Head of Value Stream to conduct full team lifecycle management: recruitment, onboarding, performance reviews, succession planning, and capability building.
Assist Head of Value Stream to foster a psychologically safe, accountable, inclusive team culture focused on continuous improvement.
Assist Head of Value Stream to manage team capacity planning, resource forecasting and annual people budget, balance workload across feature delivery, tech debt, and production stability.
Own the innovation of end-to-end card services: card management, spend limits, servicing, disputes/chargebacks, UIs, and supporting APIs.
Convert product priorities into structured delivery plans with scope, milestones, dependencies, and risk mitigation; align with Product, Ops, and platform teams for execution.
Ensure all systems meet strict non-functional requirements for high-volume production traffic.
Work with the architecture team to lead the solution design for the teams web/mobile frontends and backend microservices; enforce consistent reusable design patterns.
Assist Head of Value Stream to govern the API-first development, version control, backward compatibility, and contract testing to cut integration risks.
Assist Head of Value Stream to govern the production operability: monitoring, logging, alerts, and complete runbook support for all delivered services.
Define and enforce team-level coding, review, testing, and release standards; align with enterprise frameworks set by Principal Engineers & central architecture.
Roll out CI/CD, trunk-based development, and test pyramid quality gates to reduce production defects.
Drive regular refactoring and targeted modernization to control technical debt and lower long-term operating costs.
Enforce secure SDLC, access control, encryption, and vulnerability remediation across all team workloads.
Collaborate with Cyber, Risk and Architecture teams to maintain audit-ready solutions and PCI DSS compliance for payment systems.
Lead incident response and root-cause analysis for team-owned services; implement permanent stability improvements.
Partner with Product Owners, enterprise architects, payment vendors, and other engineering leads to align cross-team delivery.
Communicate delivery status, risks, and trade-offs to senior stakeholders; escalate blockers with clear resolution options.
Coordinate cross-team dependencies for smooth, predictable card journey releases; escalate long-term architectural gaps to Principal Engineers.
Knowledge & Experience/Qualifications
Proven people management experience leading high-performance engineering teams building enterprise customer systems.
Track record of full-lifecycle delivery (build-release-run) of complex digital products in Agile continuous delivery environments.
Hands-on proficiency with one modern frontend stack (React/Angular/Vue) and one enterprise backend stack (Java/Spring Boot, .NET, Node.js), plus REST & distributed integration patterns.
Strong fundamentals: OO design, SOLID, test strategy, performance tuning and distributed system resilience.
Practical experience building CI/CD pipelines and automated test suites.
Solid grasp of observability, incident management, SLO/SLI frameworks and reliability improvement cycles.
Experience building software under strict data, security, and regulatory compliance rules.
Clear communication with technical and business stakeholders; strong cross-team negotiation & influencing skills.
Bachelors in computer science / software engineering or equivalent relevant industry experience.
What additional skills will be good to have?
Background building financial card payment, digital banking, or card servicing platforms.
Legacy card platform modernization experience and third-party payment processor integration.
Hands-on cloud, container (K8s/OpenShift) and Infrastructure-as-Code experience.
Proven record of delivering measurable team improvements: faster delivery cycles, fewer outages, reduced technical debt.
