Area of Interest: Engineering

Short Description: Develop in-demand engineering skills on technology that supports banking worldwide.

About the business area

Our technology teams sit within our Group Chief Information Office (GCIO), building the digital platforms, systems, and products our customers and colleagues use every day, keeping assets and data secure, and delivering exceptional digital experiences.

Engineering builds and supports the systems that help the bank function smoothly and adapt to changing customer and business needs. The department focuses on delivering dependable, high-quality technology solutions that are secure, scalable and fit for purpose

Who you are

Youre curious, collaborative and motivated by solving real problems with technology. What matters most here isnt having everything figured out already its your mindset, your willingness to learn and how you work with others. You could be a great fit if you enjoy breaking down complex challenges, thinking logically and building high-quality solutions. You care about doing things well, take pride in your work and want to keep improving. Youre comfortable sharing ideas, listening to different perspectives and working with people across teams, cultures and locations. Technology moves fast, and that excites you rather than puts you off. If youre eager to grow your technical skills, explore new tools and help build solutions that make a real difference at scale, this could be the right place for you.

What you'll do

Youll work with engineers and other technology colleagues on projects that support HSBCs digital-first approach. Depending on your team, you could help develop new products and services, improve existing ones, and support software that keeps the business moving. Youll meet engineers, architects and colleagues across the wider business, and get hands-on with coding frameworks, programming languages, AI tools and modern ways of working across development and operations. You may also help monitor performance, investigate technical issues and suggest improvements. Its practical engineering work, with support from experienced colleagues, on technology used by people and customers around the world. The internship also includes structured assessments aligned to securing a graduate role, giving you chances to demonstrate how you think, collaborate and deliver, through tasks such as project work, presentations, interviews or skills-based evaluations.

What you'll learn

Youll build your engineering foundation through a mix of technical training, skills development and practical learning. Along the way, youll deepen your understanding of how systems are designed, tested and maintained to support change across HSBC. Youll explore coding languages, tech stacks and engineering best practice through classroom sessions and self-led learning, while also developing wider professional skills through workshops and coaching. Community and volunteering projects linked to your local office will help you grow beyond the technical side too. By the end of the internship, youll have stronger engineering confidence, a better understanding of how technology supports the bank, and a clearer sense of how you could continue your career in this space.

Where you'll work

Youll work in HSBCs engineering community within the Global Chief Information Office, alongside teams building and supporting technology used across the bank. Its a collaborative environment where engineers, architects and delivery teams work together across products, platforms and markets. Youll be part of a modern office culture that values curiosity, experimentation and shared problem-solving. Expect a setting where technology is central to change and where teamwork helps turn ideas into scalable solutions.

By the end of the programme, youll have the tools, knowledge, and confidence to take your next step and if you perform well, you could secure your place on our graduate programme to continue your career in technology at HSBC.
