Data Analyst - Quantitative Finance - Internship
London, GB, E14 5HQ
Area of Interest: Data Analytics
Business Area: Corporate and Institutional Banking
About the business area
Corporate and Institutional Banking helps some of the worlds largest companies grow and succeed by offering investment and financial solutions. Working across markets, sectors and borders, youll help deliver the insight, connectivity and support that enable clients to navigate change and unlock new opportunities
Who you are
Youre a logical, research-minded problem-solver who enjoys working with complex data and turning it into insight. Youll thrive if youre analytical, resilient, adaptable and confident communicating your thinking clearly. Youll need strong quantitative skills, programming ability, research capability and the judgement to work with data in a fast-paced environment. Experience in at least one object-oriented programming language is required, along with expertise in one or more areas such as machine learning, stochastic calculus, optimisation, numerical analysis, forecasting or Monte Carlo simulation. You dont need to know everything about HSBC or every market product before you join, but you should be ready to apply advanced quantitative thinking from day one. Required qualifications: a Masters or PhD in a mathematical or quantitative subject, plus an independent research project such as a Masters thesis or PhD.
What you'll do
Youll work with colleagues in Markets, including Trading, Sales, Structuring and Quantitative teams, to turn data into insight. You could research and interpret information from financial statements, economic indicators, market trends and news, then help turn that into reports, visualisations and trade ideas. You may support traders with data collection, reporting and record-keeping, monitor market performance, and help assess risks and opportunities. Youll also build tools and models using Excel, VBA or Python, and learn to use platforms such as Bloomberg, Reuters and HSBC tools. Its a hands-on role where youll work closely with market specialists and build a clearer view of how data supports decisions in fast-moving markets.
What you'll learn
Youll build specialist quantitative and markets knowledge through regulated training where needed, a global graduate induction and tailored role-specific development. Across two six-month rotations in Markets Front Office, youll deepen your understanding of quantitative finance, market dynamics, automation and customised trading systems. Youll strengthen your ability to work with data, code and mathematical models in a live business context, while also building stakeholder management skills across teams, countries and cultures. Training on industry tools and exposure to front-office environments will help you connect technical expertise with commercial decision-making. By the end of the programme, youll have a stronger grasp of where Markets is headingand how your quantitative skills can help shape it.
Where you'll work
Youll work in Quantitative Finance within Corporate and Institutional Banking, close to teams across markets, trading, sales and structuring. In the UK, youll be part of an analytical, fast-moving environment where data, modelling and market insight sit at the centre of decision-making. Its a collaborative setting where quantitative specialists work alongside front-office and risk-focused teams, sharing ideas across functions and locations. Expect a professional office culture that values precision, curiosity and continuous learning.
