The Role

The Retention Team Leader (RTL) is responsible for leading a team of seven to ten Retention Executives (REs) who drive rebid strategy, proactive contract extension efforts, competitive intelligence gathering, and the development of timely, accurate, and compelling retention proposals. The role supports retention opportunities across Defined Contribution (DC), Defined Benefit (DB), Health and Welfare (HW), Non-Qualified (NQ), Managed Accounts (PPA), and HSA/RA solutions.


The RTL is accountable for developing the sales, consulting, and relationship management capabilities of Retention Executives. Additionally, the RTL fosters specialized expertise within the Retention Team by developing subject matter experts across key products, industries, and retention disciplines.

The role requires a deep understanding of consultant and advisor sentiment, market trends, competitive dynamics, and the priorities of internal and external decision-makers. Success in the position requires executive presence, strategic thinking, consultative sales leadership, and a commitment to talent development.


In partnership with the Head of Workplace Investing Retention, the RTL helps establish and execute overall retention strategy, oversee team capacity and resource allocation, and drive associate development initiatives designed to maximize retention results. The RTL also serves as a Supervisory Principal, maintaining responsibility for the supervision, compliance oversight, and regulatory adherence of all registered representative direct reports.


The Expertise and Skills You Bring

  • Partner closely with the Head of Retention to provide leadership across critical retention initiatives, including pricing strategy approvals, unfavorable risk management, and coordination with key internal business partners.
  • Establish team goals, performance metrics, and reporting frameworks to monitor, analyze, and drive quarterly and annual retention results.
  • Oversee all deal assignment activities and manage team capacity to ensure balanced workloads, optimal resource allocation, and effective coverage across the retention team.
  • Guide and influence negotiation strategies for complex and strategic client opportunities managed by the Retention Team.
  • Collaborate closely with Segment Heads, Team Leads, Managing Directors, and Retention Executives to develop and execute retention strategies.
  • Partner with individual associates to identify strengths, development opportunities, and career aspirations while promoting best-practice sharing across the team.
  • Identify emerging industry trends, competitive developments, and retention best practices, and proactively share insights and recommendations with team members and business partners.
  • Foster a high performing, engaged, and empowered culture that encourages accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key internal and external talent sources to develop a strong and sustainable pipeline of future talent.
  • Ensure adherence to all applicable regulatory requirements, policies, and procedures, including oversight of customer communications, licensing requirements, sales materials, and client-facing presentations.
  • The successful candidate will bring 15 plus years of progressive Business Development and Retention experience within the benefits outsourcing, recordkeeping, and consulting industries, including people management coupled with at least an undergraduate degree (bachelors degree).
  • Candidates will need to demonstrate experience in successfully building alliances and influencing key decisions makers (of all levels), competitive drive and determination, strong written and oral communication skills, presentation skills, and people development skills.
  • Proven experience delivering outsourced service solutions, supported by a strong understanding of industry dynamics, competitive market trends, and financial drivers.
  • Must have the ability to manage multiple high-priority initiatives simultaneously while delivering results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Series 7, 63, and 24 are required within 90 days of hire.

Fidelitys Onsite Working Model
Fidelity is transitioning to a full-time onsite working model through a phased rollout across regions and roles. Currently, some roles and locations require 100% onsite presence, while others require less. Onsite expectations are likely to evolve as the rollout continues. This transition does not apply to fully remote roles.

The base salary range for this position is $118,000-226,000 USD per year.

Placement in the range will vary based on job responsibilities and scope, geographic location, candidates relevant experience, and other factors.

Base salary is only part of the total compensation package. Depending on the position and eligibility requirements, the offer package may also include bonus or other variable compensation.
