Full Job Description

About us

At ExxonMobil, our vision is to lead in energy innovations that advance modern living while reducing emissions. As one of the worlds largest publicly traded energy and chemical companies, we are powered by a unique and diverse workforce fueled by the pride in what we do and what we stand for.

The success of our Upstream, Product Solutions and Low Carbon Solutions businesses is the result of the talent, curiosity and drive of our people. They bring solutions every day to optimize our strategy in energy, chemicals, lubricants and lower-emissions technologies.

We invite you to bring your ideas to ExxonMobil to help create sustainable solutions that improve quality of life and meet societys evolving needs. Learn more about our What and our Why and how we can work together.

What you will do

ExxonMobils UK Summer Placement Scheme is designed to give university students the opportunity to apply their degree knowledge and fulfil their potential, gaining confidence and experience as an individual, and learning new skills in a real operational environment.

Summer Placement students work in pairs or small teams to address real-life plant challenges.  You could find yourself designing, coordinating, and analysing a plant trial or scoping a small capital project.

There will be opportunities to think independently, take initiative and be innovative. You will receive training, supervision and coaching support, and have opportunities to interact with our highly skilled manufacturing team and experience world scale Chemical Engineering operations.

Where you will work

Fawley is the UKs largest integrated petrochemical complex, producing a range of energy products, lubricants and chemicals that are vital to our everyday lives. Opened by Prime Minister Clement Atlee in September 1951, the complex covers 3,250 acres and provides employment for 2,500 valued staff and contractors. In addition to being a manufacturing hub, Fawley is also home to ExxonMobil UKs commercial headquarters with product sales, marketing and business development teams based on site.

What were looking for

We're looking for engineers who combine strong technical fundamentals with a practical, delivery-focused mindset.  Successful candidates will be curious, resilient and action-oriented problem solvers who enjoy working in a manufacturing environment and taking ownership of real-world challenges.  We value individuals who can adapt quickly, challenge constructively, simplify complex problems and drive outcomes through collaboration with operations and engineering teams.

Academic ability is important, but it is not the sole differentiator for success.  We are looking for engineers who are motivated to take ownership, continuously improve the way work is done and deliver measurable results through others as well as through their own technical capability.

To be eligible for this role, you must:

  • Be expecting to graduate with a minimum of a 2:1 Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering* in 2028
  • Be seeking to gain work experience on an 8 week Summer Placement commencing in July 2027
  • Be able to demonstrate strong personal effectiveness, leadership potential and the ability to influence outcomes through collaboration

* If you are studying a different engineering discipline and feel strongly that the ExxonMobil UK Engineering Industrial Placement Scheme is the right path for you, we would be happy to receive your application. Please provide additional context around your degree discipline in a cover letter.

What are the next steps?

If you are interested, you can apply now. The closing date for this opportunity is Sunday 1st November 2026, at which point we will begin our two stage assessment process:

  • Behavioural assessment
  • Technical competency-based interview

If your application is not successful at any stage we will let you know as soon as we can.
