A Day in the Role
A typical shift begins with a handover from the previous team, where youll review any incidents or important updates. This may include needing to coordinate with another support team to work on equipment within the Data Centre. Once the handover is complete, youll move on to day-to-day operational duties such as system monitoring, starting or closing applications, and running batch suites.
If you are on an overnight shift, you might receive an alert about an incident affecting one of our core systems. In such cases, you may need to contact the on-call support team or raising to your shift leader if the incident falls into the Major Incident Space. Next, youll deal with an out of hours Service Desk call, supporting a locked-out device.
After resolving the incidents, if youre in the office, you might take a break and have lunch with colleagues. Later in the day, you will continue supporting in system monitoring or liaise with our smart hands service that provide support in two of our data centres. Next you may look at some training or update some documentation to finetune steps you need to take when you receive a certain alert, ready for handover to the next shift.

- Any knowledge of operational procedures
- An understanding of the request, incident, problem and change management process
Essential Criteria

- The ability to be flexible and to cope with and handle change
- Experience of working in small close-knit teams and must have a good team work ethic
- Ability to work under some pressure and deliver to timelines
Desirable Criteria
It would also be beneficial, but not necessary, to have some of the following:
- Experience working in or knowledge of a Data Centre Environment
- Experience in using Control-M
- Understanding SCOM or Splunk
- An understanding of Storage Area Networks
- An understanding of Server infrastructure
- Commvault Enterprise Backup
- Experience in using, and sharing knowledge of Microsoft tools such as MS Forms, MS Teams or Power Automate

How This Role Fits into the Wider Bank
This role is part of the wider Operations Command Centre, under Service Operations which is responsible for the upkeep and management of all Bank Data Centres (located at Threadneedle Street, Debden, Moorgate, Cody Park and Spring Park). The Bank is in the middle of a huge journey moving from on-premises infrastructure over to Cloud and newer data centres, and as a result the Service Operations team are learning new skills to support this.
The Operations Staff work on a 12 hour, 24x7 shift pattern. (This will include weekends and Bank Holidays). Operators work on a rota basis, at two of the Banks Data Centre Sites based in London and Debden, there is also the option to work from home by agreement with the relevant Shift Leader.
Additional Information
You shall be required to work 14 12-hour shifts over a rolling 5-week period under a 24 hour, 7 day a week shift pattern. This shall consist of a mixture of day (8am to 8pm) and night (8pm to 8am) shifts including weekends and Bank Holidays (excluding Christmas Day) on a rostered basis. Under the shift pattern, the last shift worked on Christmas Eve shall commence at 8pm and the first shift worked on Boxing Day shall commence at 8am.
You shall also be required to cover other shifts for leave or sickness for which you shall be paid overtime accordingly.
- Currently a non-contributory, career average pension giving you a guaranteed retirement benefit of 1/80th of your annual salary for every year worked. There is the option to increase your pension (to 1/65th) or decrease (to 1/105th) in exchange for salary through our flexible benefits programme each year. The Bank has the discretion to vary standard accrual rates and dial up and dial down rates at any time and to withdraw dial up and dial down options at any time.
