Join the Innovation & Technology team to develop and maintain ULTRA, Berenberg’s in-house connectivity and messaging platform that provides FIX-based client and exchange connectivity for the investment bank. You will design and implement scalable, low-latency Java microservices, work with Kubernetes deployments, and build/maintain exchange gateways. The role requires strong OO design, multi-threading and messaging-pattern knowledge, automated testing and CI/CD practices, and includes production support responsibilities for a mission-critical 24/7 system. Collaboration with trading and other engineering teams is central to the role as ULTRA interfaces with almost all IB systems.

Apply now- Working on ULTRA puts you right into the middle of IB engineering life as you will be collaborating and interfacing practically with all other IB teams and most other systems
- You will also be responsible to work on new exchange gateway implementations, their ongoing maintenance as exchanges evolve their gateways
- Being such a mission-critical system which typically runs 24/7, any new features and changes to ULTRA will have to be fully tested in an automated manner. The role also comes with support responsibilities of varying degree
- Deep and solid experience with Java creating scalable, understandable and fully tested code for low-latency, high-throughput applications
- Profound OOA & OOD skills, dee understanding of multi-threading as well as general concepts of messaging patterns (point-to-point, pub/sub etc, event-driven)
- Experienced with the full development life-cyle: implementation, review, full automated testing, release and familiarity with the processes and tools this typically includes (CI/CD pipelines etc)
- Profound understanding of the FIX protocol and how FIX engines generally work
- TCP/IP, UDP – good understanding of IP networks, such as routing tables, subnets, BGP
- Working with containers (aka Docker) and Kubernetes highly advantageous
- Somebody who naturally and continuously strives to improve a product and its ‘eco-system’ (which includes CI/CD pipelines, automated [performance] testing, [performance] monitoring) and can do so by ‘keeping things simple’
