Job Description:

Whats the role 

 
Shell is seeking a Terminal Operator to join its team in Sault Ste. Marie (SSM). 

 

This role is part of a small, close-knit team of two operations personnel based at the SSM Terminal site, with the critical objective of delivering safe and reliable operations to serve a range of fuel customers such as Shell and non-Shell in the local market. Adherence to both Shell and regulatory compliance requirements, respect for Shells Code of Conduct, and maintaining our License to Operate are essential. This role is crucial in supporting day-to-day operations and serves as a key interface with contractors and carriers, overseeing product handling, maintenance activities, and gate-to-gate efficiency. 

 

The SSM Terminal receives refined products (ethanol-blended gasoline and distillate) via rail and truck. These products are offloaded into onsite storage tanks and then distributed to the local market through the truck loading rack. This role is well suited for individuals who are highly ambitious, safety-conscious, and able to thrive in complex and uncertain environments. The operator role is at the frontline of the companys operations. 

 

In addition, this role requires on-site presence, with overtime as needed, and participation in a rotating 24/7 on-call schedule. The terminal is open 24/7, and staffed Monday to Friday. The Operator scheduled as on call is expected to be available and fit-for-duty. 

 

Accountabilities: 

  • Responsible for all operational duties related to the receipt, storage, and distribution of its products 

  • Accountable for compliance with company and regulatory procedures in the execution of the job such as: 

  • Compliance with the HSSE (Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental) and Control Framework 

  • Compliance with the Global Terminal Operations Manual 

  • Compliance with External Regulatory Agency requirements such as Ministry of Labour (MOL), Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP), Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), Electrical Safety Authority (ESA)  

  • Accountable for handling, receiving, transferring (including physical offloading), shipping, and storing petroleum products via rail and truck 

  • Perform daily reconciliation of product inventories including transaction and documentation of product movements and analysis of loss/gain variances 

  • Manage Permit to Work (PtW) including confined space entry, control of electrostatic hazards and working at heights, including task observations 

  • Perform daily inspections and execute routine maintenance and housekeeping as per global and local Terminal Operating standards in order to ensure a safe, secure, and environmentally sound operation 

  • Ability to troubleshoot loading rack and other terminal system malfunctions 

  • Conduct quality assurance sampling and testing of products 

  • Liaison with internal/external stakeholders as required to maximize terminal operation and reliability 

  • Communicate and coordinate with local Huron Central Railway (HCRY) personnel regarding incoming and outgoing rail deliveries to ensure business continuity and safe operations 

 

What you bring  

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer 

  • Must have a High School Diploma 

  • Previous experience in oil & gas or petrochemical sectors is a strong asset 

  • Certificate in Power Engineering, Instrumentation Technology, or Millwright is considered is highly advantageous 

  • Must be willing to obtain Petroleum Mechanic License (TSSA PM3) 

  • Must possess a valid driver's license 

  • Previous experience unloading railcars/trucks is considered an asset 

  • Must be willing to work on-call shifts, including nights and weekends, with occasional overtime as needed 

  • Willing to work outside in inclement weather  

  • Willing to climb ladders, walk up and down steps, and work at heights  

  • Willing to work a rotating shift work schedule  

  • Comfortable working alone outside of normal business hours and/or with minimal supervision  

  • Willing to work overtime, holidays, nights, and weekends  

  • Willing to be on call and meet call-out standards to respond to site responsibilities and emergencies
