Whats the role

Shell Canada is seeking a Commercial Operator Canada Crude to join its team in Calgary.

Shell Trading offers a unique opportunity to join its Crude Operations team and be part of a global trading network. This role provides a challenging environment in which you will work closely with traders, with the goal of maximizing profitability.

This position is one of five roles within the Canada Commercial Operations team. The team is responsible for managing the logistics including marine, pipeline, lease, and rail of all crude and condensate movements throughout Canada. Schedulers work embedded within the trading teams to execute and optimize trades through strong commercial acumen and expertise in crude oil trading operations.

Beyond these key deliverables, the Commercial Operator is expected to own the molecule and understand both the operational and commercial implications across the Life of the Deal (LoaD). The Commercial Operator plays a critical role within the Crude Trading Operations organization and is responsible for managing losses, preventing profit leakage, and analyzing and reporting on all aspects of crude movements within the teams remit.

In addition, the position requires onsite work from Monday through Thursday, with Fridays presently offered as an optional workfromhome day.

Accountabilities:

  • Schedule a fleet of rail cars across Canada and ensure the delivery of Condensate is made on time

  • Manage crude and condensate scheduling to feeder & Mainline pipelines, terminals, leases and third parties and ensure alignment of supply and production commitments

  • Proactively support traders and develop a detailed and extensive understanding of supply and logistics to provide commercial feedback and value add

  • Provide solutions and ideas to maximize/improve profit on existing deals and/or explore hidden value/options

  • Liaise with Shell Entities, Third Party counterparties and team members to resolve and eliminate issues impacting schedules, supply and settlements

  • Effectively communicate trading needs to traders/schedulers and other team members

  • Ensure that day-to-day orders and schedules are prepared accurately and in a timely manner

  • Manage tanks and inventories

  • Perform the daily task of quantifying and analyzing discrepancies between the plan, schedules and actual performance. Analyze and communicate results to the responsible parties to take necessary corrective actions. Escalate issues when need be

  • Support the month end process for reporting production volumes and inventories in systems and for the group to reconcile gaps

  • Provide backup coverage for other scheduling desks and for volume movement actualizations

  • Interface with Traders, Schedulers, Contract Management Team and Crude Analysts to resolve Customers / Vendors issues in a timely fashion

  • Comply with various government reporting requirements

  • Support Continuous Improvement throughout the organization

  • Contribute to maximizing commercial value

What you bring

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

  • Bachelors degree in finance, Business, Supply Chain or Engineering

  • Minimum 3+ years of relevant experience within a crude scheduling role

  • Prior commodity trading and supply operations experience is required

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail are a necessity

  • Demonstrated computer application skills

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet tight deadlines, and make decisions in ambiguous situations

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy while managing competing priorities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment

  • Strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills

  • This role requires ability to answer urgent calls and/ or emails 24/7, including weekends and holidays
