About Schroders, our parent company
Were a global investment manager. We help institutions, intermediaries and individuals around the world invest money to meet their goals, fulfil their ambitions, and prepare for the future.

We have around 6,000 people on six continents. And weve been around for over 200 years, but keep adapting as society and technology changes. What doesnt change is our commitment to helping our clients, and society, prosper.

The base (Oxford)
This is an Oxford-based Portfolio Manager role. You will be expected to be in the Oxford office regularly, particularly during the onboarding period. The role also involves travel across a broad regional patch (including Oxfordshire, the Thames Valley and areas towards London and the South Coast) to support intermediary and client relationships, therefore being able to drive is essential.

The team
You will join a regional investment team responsible for discretionary portfolio management and supporting intermediary-led relationships. The team works closely with colleagues across investments, operations, risk and compliance, as well as business development, to deliver strong client outcomes and a high standard of service.

What youll do
This is a Portfolio Manager role with a strong DFM / IFA (intermediary) focus.

You will take increasing day-to-day ownership of a set of existing intermediary relationships and associated discretionary portfolios, providing excellent service and robust investment oversight. Over time, you will help grow the intermediary book in partnership with business development colleagues, while operating within agreed governance and risk frameworks.

The DFM / IFA model (how the role operates)

  • Intermediary partners (IFAs) introduce clients and remain the primary relationship owner with the end-client.
  • We act as the discretionary investment manager, responsible for portfolio construction, implementation, and ongoing management within agreed objectives and suitability.
  • Business development colleagues will support door opening and introductions; the Portfolio Manager plays a key role in winning confidence, articulating the investment approach, and then running and retaining mandates through high-quality ongoing service.

Key responsibilities

  • Take day-to-day responsibility for discretionary portfolios linked to intermediary (IFA) relationships, with appropriate senior oversight during transition.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with IFAs through responsiveness, professionalism, and confidence in external meetings.
  • Attend meetings with IFAs and end-clients, clearly explaining portfolio strategy, positioning, performance, and key risks.
  • Implement portfolio actions (rebalancing, transitions, cash management and mandate changes) in line with client objectives, suitability, mandate guidelines, and internal governance.
  • Maintain strong market awareness and demonstrate an interest in investment decision-making, including (where relevant) portfolios with exposure to direct securities as well as funds.
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders (research, trading, operations, risk and compliance) to ensure efficient implementation and strong control standards.
  • Support investment governance and reporting, including portfolio commentary and materials for internal forums as required.
  • Partner with business development colleagues to support new opportunities: help convert introductions into funded mandates and support retention through excellent service and communication.
  • Identify and escalate portfolio, operational, or relationship risks; ensure timely remediation and accurate documentation.
  • Adhere to all relevant policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

The knowledge, experience and qualifications you need

  • Experience in portfolio management / investment management, with meaningful exposure to DFM and IFA servicing.
  • Strong understanding of the service model and expectations when operating via intermediaries (pace, responsiveness, relationship management, suitability).
  • Confident communicator with resilience and professionalism; able to represent the business credibly in meetings where you are often the service provider in the room.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail; able to manage competing priorities in a client-facing role.
  • Professional investment qualification at CISI Level 7 (or equivalent). Exceptional candidates with Level 6 may be considered depending on experience and technical depth.
  • Typically 5+ years relevant experience, with evidence of readiness to step up and take ownership.
  • Oxford-based (commutable) and willing to travel regionally; driving capability is essential.

The knowledge, experience and qualifications that will help

  • Experience supporting or leading business development activity with intermediaries (networking, proposition discussions, conversion support).
  • Experience managing portfolios that include a blend of funds and direct securities.
  • Ability to produce client-ready materials (presentations, market updates, portfolio commentary).
  • Strong working knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint; comfortable using investment data and research platforms.

We recognise potential, whoever you are
Our purpose is to provide excellent investment performance to clients through active management. Diversity of thought, facilitated by an inclusive culture, will allow us to make better decisions and better achieve our purpose. This is why inclusion and diversity are a strategic priority for us and why we are an equal opportunities employer.
