Overview of Role

Responsibilities         

Research and Collections Work

  • Undertake detailed archival research to support the aims and outputs of the project.
  • Survey and analyse archival materials, including manuscripts, records, photographs, and digital content.
  • Identify provenance, historical context, creators, and themes within collections.
  • Contribute research findings to collection descriptions, catalogues, and finding aids in line with archival standards.
  • Identify items for loan to the exhibition, and ensure their condition is stable for transportation.

Documentation and Outputs

  • Produce written research summaries, reports, and interpretive content for internal and public use.
  • Support the creation of content for exhibitions, publications, websites, and digital platforms.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work closely with archivists, project staff, volunteers, and external partners.
  • Respond to specialist research enquiries relating to the project collections.
  • Liaise with researchers, academics, and community stakeholders where appropriate.

Project Support

  • Contribute to project planning, milestones, and reporting requirements.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of research activities and decisions.
  • Support evaluation and legacy planning for the project.

Other Duties

  • Comply with archive policies, including collections care, access, and data protection.
  • Participate in team meetings, and relevant training.

Experience, Skills and Competencies Required

Experience

  • Fluent in both French and English.
  • Demonstrable experience of archival or historical research.
  • Familiarity with working with primary source material.
  • Understanding of archival principles, cataloguing practices, and descriptive standards.
  • Experience of producing clear, accurate written research outputs.

Core Competencies

  • Strong analytical and critical research skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a project team.

Desirable

  • Experience working in an archive, library, or heritage organisation.
  • Knowledge of specific subject areas relevant to the project collections.
  • Experience contributing to exhibitions, public engagement, or digital humanities projects.
  • Familiarity with collection management systems and digital catalogues.
