Role overview:
The AVP, Database Engineer is a technical specialist within the Server, Storage, Unix, Databases, and Middleware team. This role focuses on the practical execution of designing, implementing, and supporting diverse database infrastructure, ensuring high availability, performance, and security for critical business operations. The engineer will drive practical database strategy, implement best practices, and directly contribute to IT landscape stability and improvement. Key responsibilities include database administration, performance tuning, security, troubleshooting, collaboration with other infrastructure teams, automation, and documentation. Qualifications include a relevant degree, extensive database administration experience, and strong technical skills in SQL and NoSQL databases.
Reporting line: Head of Server, Storage and Database
Main Responsibilities:
- Design, implement, and maintain highly available, performant, and secure enterprise database environments including Oracle, MSSQL, MongoDB, SingleStore, and PostgreSQL.
- Ensure optimal database performance through expert-level monitoring, proactive tuning, and strategic capacity planning across the entire database lifecycle.
- Develop, manage, and rigorously test robust database backup, restore, and disaster recovery strategies to guarantee data integrity and business continuity.
- Manage critical database patching, upgrades, and migration efforts, including proactive planning for End-of-Life (EOL) database software and associated hardware.
- Implement and enforce stringent database security measures, manage access controls, and ensure unwavering compliance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
- Provide expert-level troubleshooting and rapid resolution for complex, mission-critical database-related incidents and performance issues.
- Collaborate effectively with Unix/Linux, Windows, Storage, Virtualization, and Cloud engineering teams to ensure seamless infrastructure integration and operational efficiency for database systems.
- Support the deployment and management of application platforms (e.g., WebLogic, Hadoop) with a primary focus on their database dependencies and performance.
- Translate business requirements into scalable, resilient, and cost-effective database solutions.
- Act as a primary subject matter expert (SME) providing advanced technical guidance and support to internal application teams and business units on all database-related matters.
- Contribute to IT project planning and technical design discussions, offering specialized database expertise and strategic recommendations.
- Identify and implement automation opportunities for database administration tasks using scripting and configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible).
- Evaluate, recommend, and implement new database technologies and solutions to enhance performance, scalability, security, and cost-effectiveness.
- Maintain comprehensive and accurate documentation for database configurations, operational procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
- Participate in on-call rotations and incident management to ensure 24/7 availability of critical database systems.
- Perform DR/BCP exercise in all APAC locations
Technical Skill Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field highly preferred.
- Proven, extensive experience in database administration and infrastructure management, with a strong focus on enterprise-level deployments in a banking or financial services environment.
- Significant hands-on experience installing, configuring, managing, and optimizing a wide spectrum of databases including Oracle, MSSQL, PostgreSQL, and NoSQL variants such as MongoDB and SingleStore.
- Demonstrated expertise in deep database performance tuning, advanced query optimization, indexing strategies, and high-availability configurations.
- Expertise in developing, implementing, and testing comprehensive database backup, restore, and disaster recovery strategies.
- Experience supporting databases within Unix/Linux (especially Red Hat Enterprise Linux) and Windows Server environments.
- Familiarity with enterprise storage solutions (e.g., NetApp, Dell ECS) and backup technologies (e.g., DataDomain, Networker, Rubrik, Veeam) is beneficial.
- Understanding of virtualization (e.g., VMware) and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and their impact on database infrastructure; experience with cloud-native databases is a plus.
- Experience with containerization platforms like OpenShift and container storage solutions like Portworx is a plus.
- Database monitoring by Zabbix is beneficial.
- Relevant certifications such as Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, or similar are highly advantageous.

- Experience supporting databases seamlessly within Unix/Linux and Windows Server environments, with a foundational understanding of virtualized and cloud platforms.
- Ability to design, implement, and evangelize complex, scalable, and resilient database infrastructure solutions for critical business applications.
- Proactive in identifying and implementing automation opportunities for database administration tasks using scripting (e.g., Bash, PowerShell) and configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible).
