Full Job Description

Location: Chicago, IL, United States

Help shape smart credit decisions for leading financial services companies across the United States. In this role, your judgment will directly influence how we structure exposures, manage risk, and support client growth. Youll partner closely with coverage banking, treasury services, and product teams on complex transactions and ongoing portfolio stewardship. If youre rigorous, curious, and comfortable driving decisions with incomplete information, youll thrive here. Join a team where strong risk management and strong client partnership go hand in hand.

As a Credit Officer in the Commercial & Investment Bank Financial Institutions Group Streamlined Risk Team, you will lead credit risk management for a portfolio of financial services clients across multiple subsectors. Youll assess risk, design and recommend credit structures, and drive credit approvals in close partnership with coverage and product teams. Youll also monitor portfolio performance, keep risk ratings current and forward-looking, and escalate emerging concerns early. This role offers broad exposure across treasury management and trading-related products and pathways to expanded underwriting responsibilities over time.

Job Responsibilities

  • Identify and evaluate key risk factors across assigned clients, products, and industry subsectors.
  • Lead client due diligence meetings and synthesize findings into clear risk views.
  • Engage with clients, bankers, and internal partners to build understanding of business models, financials, and competitive dynamics.
  • Develop and recommend credit structures aligned to risk, including collateral and key terms.
  • Prepare credit approval materials and present recommendations to the appropriate approval level.
  • Ensure adherence to credit risk and related policies, including approval authorities and documentation standards.
  • Negotiate collateral, covenants, and other terms in partnership with deal teams.
  • Review and negotiate legal and trading documentation to confirm alignment with approved credit terms.
  • Monitor portfolio clients continuously and maintain current, forward-looking risk ratings.
  • Identify deteriorating credits early and drive proactive risk mitigation and problem-credit management.
  • Deliver annual reviews and ad hoc portfolio reporting to senior management and coordinate with Credit Services to keep systems data accurate.

Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Bachelors degree.
  • 3 years of experience in credit risk, underwriting, portfolio management, or a closely related risk role.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze financial statements, liquidity, leverage, and cash flow drivers.
  • Experience preparing credit approval write-ups and presenting recommendations to senior stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to operate independently with minimal day-to-day direction.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain risk clearly and concisely.
  • Experience working in cross-functional deal teams and managing multiple deadlines.
  • Strong relationship-management skills with internal partners and external clients.
  • Ability to identify emerging risks and take proactive action on deteriorating situations.
  • Commitment to a strong control environment and policy adherence.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Office tools.

Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Experience covering financial services subsectors such as insurance, asset management, private equity, payments, exchanges, mortgage finance, or lender finance.
  • Experience with treasury management and payment products (for example, automated clearing house debits/credits, letters of credit, corporate cards, intraday overdraft).
  • Familiarity with securities or over-the-counter derivatives exposures and related credit risk considerations.
  • Experience negotiating collateral agreements and trading documentation.
  • Knowledge of bank credit policies and procedures.
  • Experience presenting portfolio reviews or risk themes to senior leadership.
  • Interest in progressing toward broader underwriting responsibilities over time.
