Job Description

Role

The role is for an Operational Risk Manager of Asia based in HK, reporting locally into the Head of Asia Risk and functionally into Global Head of Operational Risk. The manager is responsible for identifying, assessing, and mitigating operational risks across divisions. This includes managing risks related to algo processes, trading systems, people, and external events. These initiatives involve close collaboration with trading desks, operations, compliance, and technology teams to ensure robust risk controls and governance.

To succeed in the role, the candidate must serve as a strategic partner to Trading and COO, overseeing the operational, governance, and strategic execution of risk management initiatives across the bank. He/she must ensure that risk frameworks, regulatory obligations, and business processes are aligned and effectively managed. He/she must be driven, independent, rational and a sharp decision-maker who can deliver under time and pressure. The candidate will be working closely with Market Risk, Credit Risk teams in Asia, London and NY. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and challenge of operational risk events originating in Asia, including understanding the event’s root cause and required control enhancements.
  • Assistance in driving forward the RCSA process in Asia, working with all businesses to identify and document their key risks and controls.
  • Review of operational risk metrics, e.g key risk indicators for the Asia businesses.
  • Stand by as Asia secondary resources for reporting operational risk matters, but not limiting to events like facilitation of errors performed by cash equities and programmed/algo trading teams as well as incidents of traders’ mandate breaches.
  • Provide operational risk investigative analysis and independent reports into centralised database so that senior managers can review periodic risk control processes for FO.
  • Work alongside the global Operational Risk team on any global initiatives that pertain to Asia, eg. deep dive of certain control processes.
  • Assist the Global Vendor Management team (falls within Operational Risk) on any initiatives pertaining to critical vendors based in the region.

 

Skills

The following skills and work experiences are required for this role:

  • Ability to engage, influence and obtain support from a broad range of stakeholders including traders and senior management.
  • High level of awareness of market standards for risk control and market regulations.
  • Good understanding of electronic trading and control is a bonus. 
  • Possess good investigative and inquisitive skills to report on errors.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, planning, project management, networking and influencing, team coordination and stakeholder management skills.
  • Highly motivated individual with ability to work under challenging time pressures.

 

Experience and Qualifications

  • Master’s degree level ideally in Finance, Accounting or a related field.
  • 10 years or more experience in operational risk management or audits in banks 
  • Relevant understanding of businesses in equities cash trading and electronic/algo trading. 
  • Relevant professional qualification in FRM or CFA is an advantage.
