Job Purpose

We are seeking a Principal Engineer Data Platforms to define, govern, and evolve Invescos enterprise data platform strategy.

This role plays a foundational leadership role in shaping the architectural backbone that supports Regulatory, Investment, Client Experience, and future AI/ML-driven data capabilities. The Principal Engineer will establish architectural direction, design guardrails, and ensure consistent execution across global teams while proactively modernizing the platform to meet future scalability, resilience, and regulatory demands.

Key Responsibilities / Duties

Enterprise Architecture & Platform Strategy

  • Own and define the long-term architecture and strategic roadmap for Invescos enterprise data platform.

  • Act as the final design authority for platform-level architectural decisions and cross-domain integrations.

  • Establish, govern, and evolve enterprise-wide architectural standards, reference architectures, and reusable solution patterns.

  • Drive major architectural initiatives including platform modernization, convergence, and technical debt reduction.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies and define structured adoption strategies aligned with enterprise and security architecture principles.

Platform Engineering & Enablement

  • Enable global delivery teams by providing clear architectural blueprints, frameworks, and guardrails rather than direct feature-level implementation.

  • Ensure platform capabilities support current and future analytics needs, including large-scale regulatory workloads, advanced analytics, and AI/ML enablement.

  • Identify systemic platform bottlenecks and drive architectural improvements for scalability, reliability, and operational efficiency.

  • Define platform-level patterns for ingestion, transformation, orchestration, quality, lineage, discovery, and lifecycle management.

Cloud & Data Platform Architecture

  • Provide end-to-end architectural oversight for AWS-based data platforms, including Glue, S3, Lambda, MWAA, IAM, networking, and security patterns.

  • Architect and govern Snowflake environments, including warehouse strategy, RBAC models, governance frameworks, network policies, cost controls, and performance optimization.

  • Define enterprise observability, monitoring, alerting, and reliability standards aligned with SRE and operational excellence principles.

  • Ensure platform architectures meet stringent resilience, HA/DR, security, and regulatory requirements.

Cross-Functional & Executive Engagement

  • Partner closely with Enterprise Architecture to ensure alignment with enterprise technology strategy and roadmaps.

  • Collaborate with senior product, risk, compliance, and technology leaders to influence platform investment priorities.

  • Represent Data Platforms in enterprise governance forums, architectural review boards, and regulatory-driven initiatives.

  • Translate complex architectural trade-offs into clear, executive-level narratives to support informed decision-making.

Mentorship & Technical Leadership

  • Mentor senior engineers and architects; serve as a role model for architectural rigor and excellence.

  • Influence engineering managers by shaping technical standards, capability development, and engineering maturity.

  • Foster a culture of strong architectural discipline, design documentation, and long-term thinking across the organization.

Work Experience

  • 12+ years of overall technology experience, with 8+ years leading or owning enterprise-scale data platform architecture.

  • Demonstrated experience acting as a Principal Architect or senior technical authority for complex, multi-team data ecosystems.

  • Deep hands-on knowledge of modern data platforms, including Snowflake, AWS, Airflow, and BI/analytics tooling.

  • Proven experience designing highly available, secure, and scalable distributed systems in cloud environments.

  • Strong background in data governance, security architecture, access controls, and regulatory-driven data platforms.

  • Experience influencing architecture across globally distributed, mission-critical environments.

Knowledge / Skills / Attributes

  • Exceptional architectural thinking with the ability to define long-term technical vision.

  • Strong systems-level perspective with sound judgment in balancing innovation, cost, risk, and stability.

  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex designs to executive and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Proven ability to influence without direct authority and drive consensus across diverse teams.

  • High degree of ownership, autonomy, and accountability.

  • Passion for modern data platforms, cloud architecture, and continuous architectural improvement.

Formal Education / Certifications

  • Bachelors degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
