Full Job Description

About the Team

Join ING Belgiums Tech BE organization, where data, AI, and engineering come together to solve real business and technology problems. You will work in a multidisciplinary environment combining Data Science, AI Engineering, and platform teams, operating in an agile and experimental setup like a startup within a large financial institution.

This internship is designed to be hands-on and learning-focused, while still delivering tangible value.

Internship Projects (Core Input)

You will work mainly on two concrete Data Science projects, aligned with ongoing initiatives in the organization:

Project 1 Applied Data Science / Analytics

  • Explore, clean, and analyze structured and semi-structured datasets
  • Identify patterns, trends, and anomalies relevant to business or technology use cases
  • Apply statistical methods and basic machine learning techniques
  • Translate analysis results into clear insights and visualizations

Project 2 Machine Learning / AI-Oriented Use Case

  • Build and evaluate predictive or classification models
  • Experiment with feature engineering and model tuning
  • Validate model performance using appropriate metrics
  • Collaborate with engineers to prepare models for integration or experimentation

Both projects emphasize learning-by-doing, data quality, and explainability rather than pure research.

What Youll Do

As a Data Scientist Intern, you will:

  • Work end-to-end on real data science problems (from data exploration to insights)
  • Develop notebooks, scripts, and prototypes in Python
  • Apply statistics, data analysis, and machine learning techniques
  • Visualize and communicate findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Collaborate closely with Data Scientists, AI Engineers, and DevOps teams
  • Document assumptions, methodologies, and results in a clear way

What Were Looking For

We are looking for a curious and motivated student with a strong interest in data and AI.

Required:

  • Currently pursuing a Masters degree in Data Science, AI, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, or a related field
  • Solid foundations in statistics and data analysis
  • Programming experience in Python
  • Familiarity with data science libraries (e.g. pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, matplotlib)
  • Analytical mindset and problem-solving skills

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with Jupyter notebooks
  • Basic knowledge of machine learning models
  • Exposure to SQL or cloud data platforms
  • Interest in AI, automation, or large-scale systems

What Youll Gain

  • Hands-on experience with real-world data science projects
  • Exposure to AI and data use cases in a banking / technology environment
  • Mentorship from experienced Data Scientists and Engineers
  • Experience working in an agile, multidisciplinary team
  • A strong learning curve and visibility on how data products are built in practice

Practical Information

  • Internship duration: 3 months
  • Work mode: Hybrid (Brussels-based)
