We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our Special Credit Unit in the role of Special Credit Director.

As a Special Credit Director for the HBUK Special Credit Unit, you will be responsible for protecting the Banks balance sheet whilst safeguarding the Bank against reputational and other non-financial risks. This includes working with the First Line of Defence and Wholesale Credit Risk to identify customers that are in a state of financial stress/distress and working together to mitigate such risks.

This role offers a unique opportunity to become a trusted specialist in managing complex, high-risk customer relationships while developing expertise in credit judgement, stakeholder negotiation and reputational risk management. Youll work alongside experienced Special Credit professionals, gaining exposure to real-life distressed situations and learning from previous case outcomes to strengthen your own decision-making and risk assessment capabilities. With support of an established team, youll develop the confidence to influence senior stakeholders, navigate challenging negotiations and play a key role in protecting the bank whilst helping customers achieve sustainable outcomes.

In this role you will:

  • Work alongside CMB Relationship Managers on distressed and high-risk corporate customers, identifying risks and implementing appropriate turnaround or recovery strategies
  • Conduct detailed assessments of customer financial performance, business viability and credit risk to support informed decision-making
  • Lead and participate in negotiations with customers, lenders, shareholder, advisers and internal stakeholders to achieve optimal outcomes
  • Minimise impairment and maximise recoveries whilst balancing customer outcomes, commercial objectives and reputational considerations
  • Ensure adherence to HSBCs risk framework, regulatory requirements, conduct standards and governance processes

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:

  • Strong credit risk and analytical skills, with the ability to identify, assess and mitigate complex risks
  • Sound judgement and strategic thinking, demonstrating the ability to make balanced decisions in challenging situations
  • High levels of financial literacy, including the ability to analyse, challenge and interpret financial information
  • Excellent stakeholder management and negotiation skills, with the confidence to influence and build credibility across a range of audiences
  • Strong awareness of reputational risk, conduct and integrity, ensuring decisions protect both customers and the bank
