Join us as a Senior Software Engineer at Barclays, where you'll transform and modernise our technology platform to build a market-leading customer experience that sets new industry standards. In this key role, you'll embrace a Product Operating Model mindset to understand and meet the customer, business, and technical needs. You'll drive new technology adoption across multiple business lines while developing solutions in Java. Your main responsibility will be translating business needs into rapid prototypes and evolving them into production platforms that drive huge impact across the bank.

To be successful in this role you should have:

Required Skills:

  • Proficiency in Java and BDD testing frameworks
  • Experience with AWS or other public cloud platforms
  • Proven ability to build high-scale distributed systems
  • Deep understanding of authorization models (ReBAC, ABAC, RBAC) and Policy as Code

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with IAM technologies or access control systems
  • Strong communication skills—able to bridge technical and non-technical audiences
  • A mindset for constructive disruption and continuous improvement
  • Resilience and relationship-building skills to drive change

Your assessment will focus on critical skills for this role, including risk management, change leadership, business acumen, strategic thinking, digital technology expertise, and relevant technical competencies.

This role will be based out of our Glasgow or Knutsford office.

Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

Vice President Expectations

  • Advise key stakeholders, including functional leadership teams and senior management on functional and cross functional areas of impact and alignment.
  • Manage and mitigate risks through assessment, in support of the control and governance agenda.
