Full Job Description

About the Position

We are looking for an Automation Engineer to join a highly technical group responsible for maintaining Jane Street’s rapidly scaling monitoring infrastructure of our offices, data centers, and colocation sites.

The ideal candidate will have an engineering background and the ability to automate and write code to help us streamline our workflows and systems.

Our team is collaborative in nature, spanning many internal departments and external vendors, contractors, and operations teams. Your software will interact with all of our physical deployments and integrate with complex, distributed monitoring solutions developed in and outside our walls.

Additional responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Diving deep into the facilities engineering domain and developing electrical and mechanical engineering intuition
  • Helping to develop and maintain our monitoring and alerting systems, including adding new monitoring points, editing existing ones, and creating or modifying alarm logic to ensure comprehensive coverage and minimal noise
  • Participating in the design and architecture of monitoring system implementations to ensure they are robust, intuitive, and scalable across a global and ever-growing portfolio
  • Engaging in team discussions with other software and facilities engineers to collaboratively address system challenges, propose solutions, and implement changes that improve monitoring efficacy and user experience
  • Analyzing existing monitoring scopes to identify gaps in alerting logic and potential optimizations, considering complex dependencies, standardized naming, and organizational conventions

To thrive in this role, you will need to work well both alone and on a team, manage your time exceptionally well, and have proven able to deliver no matter the task. You will also need strong logical reasoning, problem-solving, and collaboration skills—and must be able to make good judgment calls with the data and reasoning to back them up.

About You

  • Have a relevant engineering degree and 2+ years of experience in engineering
  • Experienced with writing maintainable, robust software systems and tools in any programming language
  • Strong analytical thinker with the ability to tackle complex logic problems and optimize existing processes
  • Detail-oriented and precise with monitoring, alerting, and data management tasks
  • Able to identify issues and implement effective solutions with an ownership mindset
  • Excellent verbal and written communicator
  • Interested in mission-critical electrical or mechanical engineering systems, such as UPS, generators, STS, ATS, chillers, CRACs, and associated monitoring systems such as BMS/EPMS systems, DCIM, etc.
  • Being familiar with database management and data manipulation is a plus
